A fishery that is as old and full of history on Saginaw Bay, (since the first settlers came to the Bay area)
Is it's Ice Fishing.
- Many a family survived during the depression when it's male, and sometime female members, spent all winter looking down a shanty hole spearing pickerel.
- Pickerel, is what Grandpa called walleye, and everything else that swam for that matter. My Grandpa told me many a story of the double team horses that hauled His shanty's out and of the buyer that drove his Model A Ford Pickup out on the ice and delivered fire wood and bought the weeks catch for 10 cents a pound.
- I don't think ice fishing would be as much fun if given these same circumstances today.
- 2002 Was my first year of ice guiding on the Bay. My dog sled and Otter Skin shanty worked out perfect for both transporting and fishing in comfort on the ice. Just click on my photo gallery and you'll see what I mean.
